MacBook external display in clamshell

Normally, with the lid closed (clamshell mode), MacBooks won’t drive an external display unless they’re plugged in.

So if you want to close the lid and work only on an external monitor, the device needs to be connected to power. If you ever see a setup that runs clamshell on battery, that’s a pleasant exception.
